Private plates can be used for various reasons.
From spelling your name to your initials, business, or something else entirely, there’s a personalised registration for everyone. However, there are also lots of number plate combinations that are deemed too rude for UK roads by the DVLA, which is what we’ll be exploring today.
We’ve previously covered banned number plates, but with millions of new 24 series number plates now on the roads, the DVLA has blocked the release of a whole new batch of over 300 registrations.
So, naturally, we’ve put together the top ten, as well as the entire list for you to look at and have a chuckle. Let’s kick things off with one for Jon Snow.
BA24 TAD
As we all know, this number plate spells out a naughty word. It’s one of those banned number plates that doesn’t really need an explanation because it spells out the word brilliantly, albeit with a potential Geordie twang at the end.
BA24 TDS, BA24 TRD, AND BB24 STD were also banned, so it’s pretty difficult to get around this one, even if you (for some reason) wanted to try.
GB24 FKT
A message to the current crop of British politicians or Great Britain in general? Whatever the purpose for buying this variation of “GB get stuffed” is, you can’t buy it because it’s been banned by the DVLA.
This one’s understandable as most people would read the last three letters phonetically and inadvertently swear.
GO24 HEL
No points for guessing why this one was banned! A pretty rude directive to be given to anybody, the DVLA had no qualms about removing this from circulation.
HA24 SSS
We aren’t sure why anybody would want to buy this plate that clearly tries to spell “harass”, but they won’t be able to since the DVLA has put the brakes on and banned it in advance. Again, it makes sense, as it could offend innocent drivers, which they obviously aren’t a fan of.
SK24 NKY
This reg is presumably an attempt to spell “skanky” which is pretty tame compared to some of the others on the banned 24 reg list. It’s also not an insult if you buy it for your own car, to be fair, so it’s a pretty harsh one to ban. It’s not even a word that’s used all that much in the UK, but the DVLA didn’t want to risk it so onto the banned list it goes.
TO24 ERS
From American insults to a classic British term, next, with this “tossers” number plate has been removed from UK roads. If we’re being picky, this actually spells “torfers”, with the 2 usually representing an R and a 4 usually meaning F on registrations.
Either way, we understand why the DVLA felt the need to ban this one.
AA24 OLE
Another obvious one next, even though it doesn’t accurately spell the word it intends to spell. However, it doesn’t take a linguistic expert to figure out what the intentions behind this plate could be, so it was straight into the toilet for this “AA24 OLE”.
EU24 SHT
Another potential political nightmare, especially with the UK leaving the EU a few years back, EU24 SHT won’t ever be spotted on a car in Great Britain. It might put Anglo-Euro relations back even further, which is pretty hard to imagine at this point, but not something the DVLA would want to be on the hook for.
CC24 PPY
This would be brilliant on an older, out-of-shape vehicle, if it was legal to have a new reg on an old car, of course.
However, as we all know by now, you can’t make your car look newer than it is with the registration plate, and since the 24 series denotes vehicles manufactured in the year 2024, it wouldn’t be allowed on your 2003 Vauxhall Corsa with the engine light permanently on.
FF24 RTD
We’re ending on a bit of a whiffy note with our list as we have this attempt to spell “farted”. No notes here or defences to get this one permitted on the roads.
A fair decision by the DVLA. Nobody wants a farty car.
